City of Burnaby Burnaby Mountain Water Supply Strategy Update

Year:

2023-2025

LOCATION:

Burnaby, BC

CLIENT

City of Burnaby

Project Description:

Water Street Engineering developed a revised water supply strategy for the Burnaby Mountain Water System (BMWS). The existing BMWS is reliant on the SFU Water Tower to provide pressure control and fire storage. This study evaluated the current BMWS infrastructure and proposed upgrades to support future development, with the focus on developing a preferred option plan for replacing the Water Tower.

The work included hydraulic modeling with capacity analyses of both the existing system and proposed future service areas of the BMWS to assess system pressures, storage requirements, and fire flow performance. It also included the development and evaluation of design options for a new reservoir and pump station, supported with cost estimates, and coordinating land use planning with property and alignment constraints.

Key outcomes of the assessment were:

  • Assessment of buildout water demands, including maximum day and peak hour conditions.
  • Proposed water supply network, including revised and new pressure zones.
  • Identification of future reservoir and pump station capacities and configurations.
  • Evaluation of reservoir and pump station siting options.

The project provides long-term supply strategy options for the BMWS that supports future growth and development, providing adequate service levels, and meeting City and SFU requirements.
